Over the last couple of decades, many people have found that medical marijuana can be an excellent treatment for many different health problems.  However in the U.S., because marijuana is still illegal on a federal level, you need to be living in the correct state if you want to be able to get a prescription for it.  There are currently 29 states in the United States that have legal medical marijuana.  The following is a list of 15 of them with the history of the legalization of marijuana for medical purposes.

Alaska

Alaska legalized the use of medical marijuana in 1998 with Ballot Measure 8.  It allows patients to have up to 1 oz. usable, and to own up to six plants, with three of them being mature and three of them being immature.

Arizona

Arizona legalized medical marijuana in 2010 with Prop 203.  This allows people to own up to t2.5 oz. usable and twelve plants.

Arkansas

Arkansas legalized the medical use of marijuana in 2016 with Ballot Measure 6 Issue.  This allows people to own up to 3 ounces of usable marijuana for every 14 day period.

California

California legalized medical marijuana with Prop 215 in 1996.  This law allows patients to hold up to 8 oz. of usable pot, as well as 6 mature and 12 immature plants.

Colorado

The state of Colorado legalized the use of medical marijuana in 2000 with Ballot Amendment 20.  This allowed for 2 oz. usable and six plants.

Connecticut

Connecticut legalized medical marijuana with House Bill 5389 in 2012.  This bill allows medical users to hold up to 2.5 oz. of usable pot.

Delaware

Delaware legalized medical marijuana in 2011 with Senate Bill 862.  This allows for resident patients to hold 6 oz. of usable pot at a time.

Florida

Florida legalized medical marijuana with Ballot Amendment 2 in 2016.  As of now, the amount that people may have has not yet been determined

Hawaii

Hawaii legalized medical marijuana in 2000 with Senate Bill 862.  This allows for 4 oz. of usable pot with up to seven plants.

Illinois

Illinois legalized medical marijuana in 2013 with House Bill 1, which allows patients to hold up to 2.5 ounces every fourteen days.

Maine

Maine legalized medical marijuana with Ballot Question 2 in 1999.  This allows for 2.5 ounces usable and six plants.

Maryland

Maryland legalized marijuana for medical use in 2014 with Ballot Question 2.  This allows for a thirty day supply that is yet to be determined.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts legalized medical marijuana with Ballot Question 3 in 2012.  This allows for a ten ounce, sixty day supply for each patient.

Michigan

Michigan passed Proposal 1 in 2008, which allowed for 2.5 ounces of usable marijuana and twelve plants.

Minnesota

Minnesota passed Senate Bill 2470 in 2014, which allows patients to have a thirty day supply of non-smokable marijuana.
